In simple terms, a milestone is a significant event that is important for the entire project. In comparison to tasks, project management milestones usually do not have any duration, as they are just landmarks to measure the progress in-between project completion.
For example, it can be report finalization, budget approval, receipt of external review, or completion of a certain phase.
In GanttPRO Gantt chart maker software, there are several ways to add milestones.
You can add them:
- Through the list of tasks on a project grid
- Through the Gantt chart
- By converting a task into a milestone
Milestones are visualized on a chart as a diamond-shaped checkpoint.
Through the list of tasks on a project grid
In this case, there are two options.
1. Using Advanced buttons
Click on one of the blue advanced buttons Add a milestone at the bottom of the task list. There are 2 buttons for different levels of milestones. Choose Add a milestone 1 to create a milestone of the same WBS level of the Subtask.
Choose Add a milestone 2 to create a milestone of the same WBS level of the Summary task.
2. Using the three-dot button
Another option is to click on the three-dots button on the right side of a task 3 and choose Add a milestone 4. A milestone will be of the same WBS level as that task.
Through the Gantt chart
To add a milestone straight from the Gantt chart, right-click on a corresponding task bar 1 or milestone and select Add a milestone 2. That way, you will create a milestone of the same level.
By converting a task into a milestone
You can convert a task into a milestone by clicking on the three-dots button on the right side of the task name 1 and selecting Convert to milestone 2.
It also possible to do it right-clicking on the corresponding task bar on a Gantt chart.
Another option is to change task type in Task settings.
It is also possible to establish dependencies between milestones and between milestones and tasks. For this, use any of the methods mentioned here for creating dependencies between tasks.
