Grouping columns
In Board view, task cards are displayed in columns based on the selected grouping option.
Tasks can be grouped by values from Default fields 1: Status, Priority, and Assignee.
- Grouping by Status is the default option, where tasks are distributed across the following columns: Open, In Progress, Done, and Closed.
- Grouping by Priority organizes tasks into columns based on priority levels: Highest, High, Medium, Low, and Lowest.
- Grouping by Assignee arranges tasks into columns according to the project participant or virtual resource they are assigned to. Unassigned tasks are displayed in a separate column.
Additionally, tasks can be grouped by values from certain Custom fields 2 created in your account. These include:
- List
- Color
- Multiselect
- People
- Labels
Here’s an example of grouping by a Custom field (List) if you need to create a board with Custom statuses (different from the default).
💡 Learn more about different types of custom fields.
When grouping by a Custom field, tasks without any assigned value from that field will be placed in a general column on the left (named No value). If the Custom field used for grouping is deleted, the default grouping by Status will be applied. Task cards will be automatically moved to the corresponding Status column.
Note:
- If a task is assigned multiple custom values, it will appear in all relevant columns.
- Moving a card to a different column will change its custom value to match the column where it is placed.
- If you move a card to the first column with unassigned tasks, the task will no longer have a custom value.
Sorting cards
By default, task cards within columns are sorted by Creation date in descending order, with the latest tasks at the top. You can change the sorting order by clicking on the arrow 1 and selecting a different sorting option from the drop-down list 2. The available sorting options include:
- Status
- Priority
- Task name
- WBS (Work breakdown structure)
- Assignee
- Creation date
- Start date or End date
These sorting configurations will be saved and applied to each user’s board individually.
Moving cards within and between columns
You can move cards in any active sorting mode, as well as when a filter is applied.
If sorting is enabled and you move a card between columns, the card will automatically take its new position in the target column according to the active sorting rule.
If sorting is enabled and you move a card within the same column, the sorting will be cleared (the "Sort by" dropdown will be empty), and your custom order will be applied instead.
This custom sorting will be saved until you enable a new sorting option.
